If you are looking for a simple sugar-free way to satisfy your sweet tooth or chocolate craving, try this Chocolate-Avocado Mousse recipe. Even if you don’t like avocado, you’ll like this. I’m serious!
If I hadn’t told you in the title, you’d never know that avocado creates the silky base in sugar-free chocolate dessert. The avocado is well camouflaged so that even avocado haters like my daughter enjoy this. Some people call it chocomole, but my husband calls it healthy comfort food.
How to Make Chocolate-Avocado Mousse
Soak the dates until they are soft. I use boiling water to speed the process.
Blend the dates, avocado, almond milk, cocoa powder or carob powder, vanilla, and a pinch of salt until very smooth. And there you have it–a simple date-sweetened dessert.
How to Serve Chocolate-Avocado Mousse
Spoon into individual serving dishes or a serving bowl. If time and patience allow, refrigerate for 1 hour. Otherwise, eat it right away. If desired, garnish with raspberries, sliced strawberries, cherries, or whipped coconut cream.
Chocolate-Avocado Mousse Variations
Chocolate-Avocado Mousse with Banana: Add a peeled fresh or frozen banana while blending.
Raw Chocolate Avocado Mousse: Soak dates in warm water until soft, about 30-60 minutes. Drain, reserving the liquid. Substitute date soaking liquid for the milk. Substitute raw cacao powder for the cocoa powder.
Carob-Avocado Mousse: Substitute carob powder for the cocoa powder.
Chocolate Fudge Bars: Freeze in popsicle molds for several hours.
Chocolate Avocado Mousse
Ingredients
- ¾ cup pitted dates
- 1 large ripe avocado
- 1 cup almond milk or other non-dairy milk
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- Pinch salt
Instructions
- Place dates in a small saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Remove from the heat. If dates are not soft when poked with a fork, let stand until soft, about 5 minutes. Drain.
- Cut avocado in half and remove the pit. Scoop the avocado pulp into a blender.
- Add milk, softened dates, cocoa powder, vanilla, and salt. Process until very smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed.
- Add additional milk or date soaking liquid a tablespoon at a time as needed to achieve a thick, smooth pudding consistency.
- Taste for sweetness. If desired, add monk fruit, stevia, or maple syrup to taste.
- Spoon into individual serving dishes or a serving bowl. If time allows, refrigerate for 1 hour. Keeps in the refrigerator for 3 days.
